What We Do

At New Patterns of Perception, we use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which combines talk therapy (processing events through conversation) with the identification of thought patterns that may be causing difficulties in a person’s life. Once these patterns are recognized, we apply cognitive restructuring (changing thought processes) along with behavioral conditioning to support meaningful change.

CBT is often described as a teaching therapy, but rather than feeling like a lecture, it is a collaborative process. The therapist and patient work together much like an apprentice and an experienced craftsman. Patients play an active role in their own recovery, which is one reason CBT is so effective. Through this process, patients gain insight into:

  • The self (factors within their control)

  • The environment (current or past experiences outside of their control)

  • Other influences, such as cycles of behavior passed down through family history, whether through genetics or learned patterns.

We work with a wide range of patients, addressing concerns such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, and many other challenges.

In addition to advanced education and 20 years of licensure and clinical experience, Kurt brings additional training and expertise in areas such as Marriage and Family Therapy, Play Therapy, Substance Use Treatment, and Communication. We continue to expand our practice by welcoming skilled professionals in Social Work, Play Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

At New Patterns of Perception, we believe in a team approach to treatment. If you do not already have a mental healthcare team, we will help you build one together. This may include professionals such as primary care physicians, psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists, or others whose expertise may be valuable.

We also partner closely with parents to ensure that children receive the best possible learning environment. This often involves collaborating with school psychologists, counselors, and diagnosticians, and we are even available to attend ARD meetings when appropriate.

The involvement of additional professionals is always your choice. In many cases, treatment can be completed successfully without outside support. In others, their expertise enhances the process, and they become part of your trusted mental healthcare team.

Our Vision Statement

New Patterns of Perception is a mental health practice that emphasizes a team approach to treatment. Care begins with the therapist and patient, and when appropriate, expands to include other healthcare professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, primary care providers, gastroenterologists, and others. At the core, however, treatment begins with a team of two: the patient and the therapist.

Our Core Beliefs

  • We believe in using only evidence-based practices.

  • We believe in ethical practice and in protecting the confidentiality of our patients.

  • We believe in treating causes, not just symptoms. While coping strategies can provide immediate relief, we focus on identifying and addressing root causes.

  • We believe in the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Jungian psychology.

  • We believe that therapy is about personal growth. The therapeutic process often reveals additional maladjustments, and by addressing these distortions and patterns, patients can realize their full potential.

  • We believe in a thorough examination of each patient. The presenting problem may not always be the most serious issue, but rather a symptom of a deeper dysfunction.

  • We believe that maladjustments and maladaptive thought processes in the mind can lead to physical symptoms in both body and mind.

  • We believe in seeking expert input and intervention from other healthcare disciplines when appropriate.

  • We believe that there are times when psychotropic medications are necessary in conjunction with CBT. Research has shown that combining medication with CBT can be up to 80% more effective than medication alone.

  • We believe in our patients. Through their own work in therapy and by following therapeutic guidance outside of sessions, they can realize their potential.

  • We believe in the treatment team concept, which includes frequent communication and consultation with other healthcare providers involved in a patient’s care.

  • We believe that therapy is a process that takes time. It is ultimately the patient’s choice to address maladjustments, while the therapist’s role is to identify them and support the patient in making decisions.

  • We believe that most people can benefit from therapy, as maladjustments and maladaptive behaviors are part of the human condition.
